ABOUT FALSE NOTE
Exhibition essay by Angelica Sule, Director of FVU
The themes in this solo exhibition relate to the musical and idiomatic meanings of the term ʻFalse Noteʼ - which is defined in music as a note that has been muted to the point that there is no discernable pitch, but is still an essential part of the composition and its rhythm. This term also has a murkier suggestion - to strike a false note is to miss the mark, fall out of sync - reminding us of miscommunications, untruths, insincerity and inconsistencies.
The two films follow the quotidian experiences of characters who feel incompatible with the work environments they inhabit. The protagonists conform, adapt, ache and falter under insincere neoliberal systems. They participate through choice and necessity, they are both valuable and invisible, they oscillate between production and refusal, they engage in petty theft and double lives. They are trained in emotional resilience, they reclaim their time, they express unspoken comradeship through acts of not smoking and not smiling. The song Basics of Buoyancy paraphrases lyrics borrowed from Robert Chapmanʼs recent book Empire of Normality: Neurodiversity and Capitalism.
LIVE PERFORMANCE: Thursday 30 May, 7pm
The music in False Note has been developed in collaboration with Emma Daman Thomas (Islet, Warm Leveret). After the exhibition closes, Freya and Emma will devise a new live performance expanding on the False Note score, staged within the installation. The performance programme is generously supported by a PRS Women Make Music award. The performance is free to attend and booking information will be available soon via the Site Gallery website.
